California Syrah is rarely as tannic as Cabernet, but has an equally deep color and (when done right) a similar degree of flavor complexity. This combination gives Syrah a food-friendliness that is akin to Pinot Noir's. Both varietals can match beautifully with rich seafood dishes as well as robust meats. Many of the best Syrahs display an earthy, aromatic component, which when countered by the ripe plum and berry flavors creates an intriguing and inviting impression. Syrah is more full-bodied than Pinot Noir, striking a balance between power and finesse. Izzo Syrah has a dense middle with firm tannins. Aromas of deep rich black and red berries are the first to be exposed. This is followed by hints of plum and pepper, with tobacco and gamy notes that are so desirable in great Syrah. On the palate the fruit is young and vibrant, with a bold mid palate kept in balance by lively acidity. The finish is soft and gentle with beautiful integrated tannins. The Izzo Syrah is a perfect match for tenderloin or fillet mignon. It is bold enough to stand up to game dishes such as rosemary encrusted rack of lamb. Enjoy this wine now, and will continue to develop and mature over the next 6-10 years. |
