Probably the main attraction of Viognier is its powerful, rich, and complex aroma that often seems like overripe apricots mixed with orange blossoms or acacia. With a more distinctive an aroma-flavor profile than nearly any other grape, Viognier is usually made in a dry style and seems to appeal more to the typical Chardonnay drinker. The distinctive Viognier perfume holds up even when blended with a large portion of other grapes. Our Izzo Viognier has intense aromas of lychee nut, tropical fruits (pineapple, papaya, guava), spicy white pepper, mandarin/citrus peel, and nutty almost hazelnut undertones. The wine is dense but not flabby with great weight on the palate that gives you a rich but not cloying wine. The acidity is firm and gives this wine its backbone. Try pairing this wine with a variety of grilled seafood dishes, chicken dishes with lively marinades, and of course anything with garlic. Because the prime appeal of Viognier is its fresh and heady aroma, it is a wine that should be consumed young to experience the intense aromatics. So we suggest you drink this wine now, slightly chilled, or cellar over the next 2-3 years. |
