Pinot Noir is one of the oldest grape varieties to be cultivated for the purpose of making wine. Ancient Romans knew this grape as Helvenacia Minor and vinified it as early as the first century AD. Recognized worldwide as a great wine grape, Pinot Noir is grown in a number of wine regions of the world.

Working with new clones of Pinot Noir planted in the Edna Valley, Thomas Clay strives to produce a wine that rivals some of the top California Pinot Noirs. This valley has unique limestone soil which was raised up from the ocean floor more than 15 million years ago. This soil imparts a unique terroir that Pinot Noir aficionados recognize as Edna Valley.

The nose is intense with notes of of black cherry, spice, and hints of plum.  On the palate, the Thomas Clay Pinot Noir is full-bodied and rich but not heavy, with a nice balance of acidity and tannins yet a velvety smooth finish. There is substantial flavor despite its delicacy.

Ideally you would serve this wine with grilled mushrooms, roasted and braised lamb, pheasant, and duck, as well as grilled meaty fish, such as salmon. The best Pinot Noir friendly foods are simple and rich. Go easy on the spices, some of which may mask the delicate flavors of Pinot Noir.
