This most widely planted red grape varietal in northern Italy had been a mainstay of Italian immigrants to the United States. Barbera is ideally suited to California's growing conditions where the heat and lack of rain provide intense flavors and extended hang time for Barbera's classic acidity to achieve balance. This Barbera is a unqiue wine, to say the least. In the glass, this wine is very dark ruby and heavily extracted. On the nose, sweet cherry pie, plum, violet and spicy cinnamon/clove aromas give way to profuse flavors of dark berries. These aromas lead to rich, sweet-edged flavors of red fruits, dried currants, leather, minerals, licorice, stewed fruit and vanilla. To be traditional, this wine beautifully complemented bruschetta, various antipasti, lasagne, and scalloppini. However, you can also serve this wine with any traditional "red wine" dishes like grilled steak or lamb. |
