Pinot Gris (or pinot grigio, as it is known in Italy) is probably is the best-known "white" variant-clone of Pinot Noir. Ripe Pinot Gris grapes may be described as having colors from bluish grey to light pinkish brown. Clusters with a variety of colors are not unusual. Pinot Grigio has long been a favor wine to quaff on the patio on summer afternoons. The crisp acidity makes the wine perfect for sipping with or without food. However, California grown Pinot Grigio has added depth of character from extended hang time afforded by the warmer climate. This perfumy wine elicits floral scents of honeysuckle, aromas and flavors of lemon and orange blossom. Ripe melon, crisp apple, fig, pears, clove and anise flavors intermingle amidst a moderately rich texture. The added depth for its California heritage allows this wine to pair with more intense dishes than the typical shellfish, pasta and antipasti dishes. Try this wine with the above dishes, but also with grilled chicken topped with an olive tapenade, or go crazy and experiment by pairing your favorite dish with this wine. We really like it with Thai food, yum! |
