This classic Bordeaux red variety shares many attributes with Cabernet Sauvignon. It too is thick-skinned, concentrated, tannic and deeply colored. Petit Verdot also ripens even later than Cabernet Sauvignon, which accounted for its diminished popularity in Bordeaux during the 1960's. A revival of sorts has occurred in recent years both in Bordeaux and California, where it is planted mainly in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. A rich, age-worthy and sometimes spicy wine, Petit Verdot is a wonderful component in Meritage blends and bottled alone provides a striking alternative to big Cabernet Sauvignons. We have styled this wine to be a balance between bright fruit and earth notes. This wine has deep coloring, extracted notes, balanced acidity, and soft tannin which adds longevity to the blend. The peppery spiced fruit adds a distinct complexity at maturity. Try this rich wine with Beef Wellington topped with gorgonzola or other classic beef dishes like a standing rib roast. |
